A. Qualifications

  • A healthcare professional who is an active member of NAHQ and the respective affiliated state association where/if one exists.
  • Demonstrates leadership within the profession of healthcare quality, either through previous participation on a NAHQ team or through a previous leadership role with an affiliated state association
  • Possesses skills of governance through previous experience as a board member, such as through board membership with a professional association or community organization
  • A NAHQ member with current CPHQ certification

B. Leadership Functions

The primary role of a director-at-large is from the perspective of governance. Through this role of providing leadership and mentoring, the Board ensures that the work of the association is accomplished and the long term viability of the association is ensured.

Governance:

  • Collaborates with the duly elected officers in the general governance of the affairs of NAHQ.
  • Participates in the development of the annual budget as well as the ongoing monitoring of resource consumption to ensure financial viability and long-term stability.
  • Participates in the development and ongoing review of the strategic plan as it relates to the overall success of NAHQ.
  • Shares information with the NAHQ Board of Directors related to issues or trends in the field of healthcare quality and patient safety.
  • Reports significant problems or concerns to the appropriate staff, or board member.
  • Meets the obligations and time commitments of this position, to attend regularly scheduled meetings, conference calls, and to regularly check and respond to electronic messages.
  • Is available to any member by phone, email, or mail to answer questions, provide consultation, and respond to concerns. Refers questions to appropriate staff for follow-up.
  • Before assuming office, participates in board orientation, reviews all policies and procedures, coordinates a smooth transition with their predecessor, and attends the annual meeting.

C. Role Functions

The secondary role of the director-at-large is to facilitate team success by serving as a resource from the board to the team and team leader. The director-at-large is not intended to be active participants in the work of the team, but to serve as a resource and support to the team leader.

Teams

  • Serves as board representative to NAHQ team(s) at the appointment of the president.
  • Communicates relevant board decisions to the assigned team through the team leader and periodically reports team progress to the board.
  • Ensures that the team’s actions are consistent with NAHQ’s mission, vision, strategic plan, financial requirements and team goals and acts as the team’s advocate to the board.
  • Works with the team leader and staff to develop team goals and assist the team leader in evaluating the team’s accomplishments
  • If a team is not able to fulfill its charge, the board liaison will work with the team leader and NAHQ staff to analyze the issues and bring recommendations to the board for resolution.

Special Projects

  • Participates on special projects as assigned by the president including
    • creation of team charters, project plans, timeline development and estimating resource needs
    • collaboration with other board members for project success

Outreach

  • Attends affiliated state meetings or other local activities as requested and approved or as assigned by the board. Arrangements for affiliate state visits will be coordinated by NAHQ staff.
  • Participates in the State Leaders Summit and attends all member-facing calls including Team Leader and State Membership calls.
  • Attends meetings or otherwise participates in contact with the External Advisory Council (EAC) to collaboratively identify future direction for the healthcare quality profession and the professional, as assigned by the president,
  • Attends meetings or otherwise participates in contact with other organizations with which NAHQ seeks to develop a collaborative relationship, as assigned by the president.

D. Time Commitment

  • 3-year term, beginning January 1st of the year after election
  • 20 hours per month

E. Estimated Number of Meetings/Conference Calls

  • Participation at annual educational conference and board related activities
  • Minimum of four onsite meetings, including the annual educational conference
  • Approximately three board-related calls in addition to 8 member-facing calls

F. Aniticipated Personal Financial Commitment

  • No personal money is required
  • Time commitment from employer
