A few years ago, several people at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement led a study tour with chief executive officers from major health systems, including GE, Alcoa, Johnson & Johnson, and 3M. During these visits, the meetings with the CEO were attended by the chief financial officer, who, in the words of IHI’s Maureen Bisognano, “was invariably, a visible, vocal, and impatient advocate for improvement.”
