ICD-10 Annual Summit: April 16–17
If moving to International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 affects your work and responsibilities, then you won’t want to miss the 2-day ICD-10 Annual Summit on April 16–17 in Washington, DC. The summit will provide information, education, and resources for ICD-10-Clinical Modification (CM) and ICD-10-Procedure Coding System (PCS) preparedness and implementation. (ICD-10 is used to code and classify mortality data from death certificates, having replaced ICD-9 on January 1, 1999. ICD-10-CM is planned to replace ICD-9-CM, volumes 1 and 2.) Opinion leaders will address the challenges and opportunities of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS and identify optimal ways to ensure their implementation and potential return on investment. The summit is supported by leading healthcare organizations, including the American Health Information Management Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Association of Health Administration Management. Registration fees are the same for NAHQ members and AHIMA members. Early-bird registration ends Friday, April 10.

Book Review: Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Satisfaction
| The goal of Mark Graban’s Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Satisfaction is to help healthcare leaders, providers, and support personnel across the spectrum of healthcare delivery in hospitals better understand Lean. The author begins by discussing why hospitals need Lean and makes the case that through the application of Lean principles, organizations are showing improvements in quality, patient safety, cost of care, and patient satisfaction. Subsequent chapters cover Lean concepts and provide examples of how those concepts, when applied to various areas in healthcare delivery, brought about changes that were felt by the organization, the staff providing care, and ultimately the patients. These examples of improvements help the reader see the usefulness of Lean in dealing with issues that are often assumed to be unsolvable or just accepted as normal in a given environment. |
 |
The book flows logically, and each chapter ends with summary points and questions. Although the book covers the primary Lean concepts and tools and provides excellent examples of improvement, it is not intended to be a comprehensive guide on how to apply Lean. Rather, it is a good starter reference for those in healthcare wanting to learn how other healthcare organizations use Lean to lower costs and improve quality, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. This book is available in the NAHQ online store. NAHQ members receive free shipping and a 10% discount!
