Hitting the Ground Running

Deepen Your Knowledge

Prior to the start of the conference, you’ll want to prioritize your schedule with your current responsibilities and goals in mind.  Review the Program Book you received with your conference materials and identify the best sessions for you. The Program Book includes a copy of speaker handouts that will give you a clear outline of each session. This may prompt questions that you’ll want to pose at the question-and-answer period at the end of sessions. Write your questions down and prepare to take good notes.

Please remember being on time is a courtesy to other participants and to the speakers. If you arrive after the session has begun or you must excuse yourself, please do so quietly. This may seem obvious, but it is important not to distract other attendees’ attention from the speaker.  Guide the doors gently to a closed position to keep down the noise.

Question-and-Answer Period

Most speakers will have a question-and-answer period at the end of the session, so save your questions until after the presentation. When you are called upon, stand and speak loudly so the whole audience can hear your question. If question-and-answer time is running out and you still have an unanswered question, don’t despair. Many speakers will stay after their presentations and answer individual questions outside the lecture hall so that the next session is not delayed.

Take Care of Yourself

While the excitement of a conference can get the adrenaline flowing, be sure to monitor your body’s response to the change in your routine. Take frequent breaks if you need them. Drink plenty of fluids. Try to stay as close to your normal eating and drinking pattern as possible even though it may be tempting to overindulge.  Be sure to get enough sleep. Take advantage of your hotel’s fitness center or take a walk to keep you feeling your best. It’s no fun being sick at a conference.

Network, Network, Network

A conference is a priceless opportunity to make yourself known and to get to know others. You’ve already set some goals that will get you started. Now be alert to other opportunities. Never underestimate the value of connecting with other conference participants. This is your time to meet with those who share a common commitment and exchange contact information or business cards. You get to meet new people, and see old friends for some good laughs. Make the most of each opportunity and participate as fully as you can.
