NAHQ Honors 2011 Professional Recognition Award Winners

The National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ), a professional association of healthcare quality and patient safety individuals, recognized members and state affiliates for their contributions to the profession at the 36th Annual Educational Conference in Sacramento, CA, September 15-18.

President Susan Goodwin, MS RN FACHE CPHQ FNAHQ, presented the awards during the general session and acknowledged the time and energy the winners contribute on both the national and local levels, as well as the significant role they play in healthcare quality and patient safety.

President's Award

This inaugural President's Award recognizes a member identified by the Board for contributions to NAHQ above and beyond their assigned tasks as a volunteer. Winner Cynthia Barnard, MBA MSJS CPHQ, is the Director of Quality Strategies at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She has chaired the internal task group for Ensuring Integrity of Practice in Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety, organized survey research, managed meetings of partnerships and served as one of NAHQ's key voices.

Luc R. Pelletier Healthcare Quality Award

The Luc R. Pelletier Healthcare Quality Award recognizes a member who has developed a performance improvement program or initiative. Winner Kathleen Masiulis is the Senior Vice President at the Long Island Health Network in Melville, NY. She received the Luc R. Pelletier Healthcare Quality Award for her Provider Initiated Pay for Performance Program that uses quality metrics to allocate at-risk funds among the network's 10 hospitals.

NAHQ Fellowship

The NAHQ Fellowship Program was developed to recognize NAHQ members who have made outstanding contributions to the healthcare quality profession. Pursuit of fellowship demonstrates dedication to excellence and commitment to leadership. Two new fellows were inducted in 2011.

Norma Torres Delgado, MHSA CPHQ FNAHQ, is the Associate Chief Executive Officer at San Lucas Hospital in Puerto Rico. As a leader in quality, Delgado works on the "Quality Rally" initiative, hosts a weekly healthcare quality radio show, offers volunteer consulting on surveying and process improvement and is a speaker and mentor within local healthcare organizations.

Marsha Moxley, MA BSN RN CPHQ FNAHQ is the Vice President Clinical Quality at TeamTSI, Inc. Moxley is a long time volunteer and leader at the state level in Florida, instructs CPHQ review courses and coaches and speaks nationally on quality topics.

JHQ Impact Article Award

The Journal for Healthcare Quality (JHQ) Impact Article of the Year Award recognizes an article that had impact on the profession and the professionals who read it. Winner David Russell works for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and is recognized for his article Using Technology to Enhance the Quality of Home Health Care, published in the September/October 2010 issue. His article featured an evaluation scientist looking at outcomes and effectiveness of new initiatives at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.

Gold Award for Association Excellence

The Gold Award for Association Excellence recognizes a state affiliate that supports and advances the activities of NAHQ. Winner Florida Association for Healthcare Quality (FAHQ) obtained strong membership growth since 2008, increased educational offerings with higher attendance, promoted Healthcare Quality Week (HQW), generated media activity around the state conference and HQW and produces a quality newsletter sent to more than 600 healthcare community members on quality issues and initiatives.

Silver Award for Association Excellence

The Silver Award for Association Excellence recognizes a state affiliate that supports and advances the activities of NAHQ. Winner Mississippi Association for Healthcare Quality (MsAHQ) has obtained strong growth since 2008, realigned state leadership to provide better outreach, developed 3 new state award opportunities, raised funds for the Healthcare Quality Foundation (HQF), promotes Healthcare Quality Week (HQW) and conducted 2 educational needs assessments.

Bronze Award for Association Excellence

The Bronze Award for Association Excellence recognizes a state affiliate that supports and advances the activities of NAHQ. Winner Virginia Association for Healthcare Quality (VAHQ) conducted their first-ever board self-assessment for better board development, successfully attained partnerships with other state quality organizations, used an annual member survey to identify website and newsletter updates and obtained more than 50% attendance at the state annual conference.

State Association Education Program

The State Association Education Program Award recognizes a state affiliate that supports and advances the activities of NAHQ through their educational offerings. Winner Texas Association for Healthcare Quality (TAHQ) doubled their course offerings in 2010 to include monthly webinars and 2 sessions by Disney on leadership and quality services. Sessions received high evaluations and averaged no less than 25 members per event.

State Association Website/Newsletter

The State Association Website/Newsletter Award recognizes a state affiliate that supports and advances the activities of NAHQ through their website and newsletter. Winner Connecticut Association for Healthcare Quality (CtAHQ) started their quarterly newsletter in 1998. Presently the newsletter includes member-suggested articles, content based on an educational needs assessment, member accomplishments, promotion of state events and promotion of NAHQ events and opportunities.
